Understanding How Your Gas Flow is Regulated

Gas is piped into your home or business so that it can be used to operate many appliances such as heaters, hot water tanks, and stovetops. The amount of pressure that the gas arrives at is extremely important when it comes to keeping these items functioning properly and safely. Natural Gas Regulators keep the gas flow steady in order to avoid accidents and malfunctions, but many homeowners and business owners don’t understand the importance of this device.

Natural gas comes through a pipe under extremely high pressure. The regulator takes its cue from a thermostat and regulates the flow of gas by either increasing or decreasing the flow and heat. It is also designed to control the amount of pressure that the gas arrives at according to an appliance’s specifications. It even has the ability to restrict the natural gas flow so that the gas doesn’t enter a home unwanted.

Internal valves are used to increase or decrease the pressure of the gas so that it is at the correct level for your appliances. A loading mechanism, control device, and sensor element all work together to achieve this goal.

There is a loading mechanism that restricts the regulator’s settings. When the regulator is turned on, an internal spring is compressed. When the pressure of the gas flow reaches this spring, it sends a message to a sensor element. From there the message is sent on to the control element which then regulates the outgoing pressure to the correct level.
