Kitchen staff must have a sense of direction. Without it, there will be chaos in the kitchen. However, one chef cannot wear multiple hats. The key to success is balance. It’s the only way to build a seasoned team.
The Recipe Riot
There are many types of cooks, and they all have specific duties in the kitchen. The most important position goes to the head chef. Cooking is not a duty for a head chef. A head chef’s job is to oversee other cooks as they prepare their dishes.
Next up is a sous chef. A sous chef is second-in-command in the kitchen. Unlike a head chef, a sous chef will cook a variety of dishes. A restaurant can have more than one sous chef. It all depends on a head chef’s daily obligations and the size of the kitchen.
Sous chefs have their own team of chefs. One of these chefs is called a station chef. This type of chef works in a specific location in a kitchen, and he or she will often have a specific skill set. For example, a station chef could be someone who only works with vegetables.
The final chef on the list is called a commis chef. This is an entry-level position. Anyone who lands this job will work closely with a sous chef.
