In the past, it was not uncommon for drivers to carry emergency kits in their vehicles in case they broke down in the middle of nowhere, but as cars have become more reliable, these have largely fallen out. While many people do not see the need to carry a full emergency kit in their vehicle anymore, there are still some tools that everyone should have in his or her car.

Emergency Light

A safety light is one of the most important things you can carry in your car. If you break down on the side of the interstate at night, then you can put out a safety light to alert other drivers that you are there and to be careful. This is especially important in rural areas where there may not be many streetlights to help you see and be seen.

Multimeter

A multimeter is another good tool to have with you in your car. They are small, usually about the same size as a smartphone, but thicker. If your car is having issues starting, then you can use the multimeter to check your battery to see if it is dead or if the problem is something else.

Ratchet Set

Why would you ever need a ratchet set in your car? Let’s say you are driving down the road and all of the sudden your power steering goes out, voltage reading drops to zero, and all of your emergency lights come on. What is going on here? Chances are your serpentine belt just broke, and you have no accessories anymore. Changing a belt is an easy job and should not take more than a few minutes, but if you do not have the tools, then you are not going to be able to change it. These belts are held in place with a tensioner that must be loosened to put a new one on.

There are a few other things you should carry as well such as fuses and bandages, but if you have an emergency light, multimeter, and ratchet set, then you should be OK in most situations.
