If you’re excited about moving to TCU off-campus student housing, you might not have given much thought to the practical matters that will affect your daily life. By doing a little advanced planning, you can avoid the unpleasant surprises that are common for students adapting to independent living. Here are a few tips to help you stay prepared.

Look for Public Transportation

Even if you own a newer car, you should assume it will break down at least once during the semester. Have a plan for getting to the campus and to any jobs that you work in the evenings. Most off-campus housing is located near a bus stop, but double-check to make sure. If not, find out about the availability of taxi cabs or ridesharing apps in the area.

Plan Your Meals in Advance

Try to limit your grocery shopping to a weekly event. Buy enough food to last the week or longer. For snacks, buy nuts or seeds in bulk. Buy fresh produce that will last throughout the week. Get meat that’s on sale and freeze anything that you won’t use within a day or two.

Leave Time for Recreation

You won’t last through the semester if you spend every moment working or studying. You also need physical activity and recreation. Fortunately, most TCU off-campus student housing communities offer free access to fitness centers and swimming pools to their residents. Take advantage of these resources to stay fit and release some stress. You’ll perform better in pursuing your education, and you’ll have more energy each day.
