Curtains can add just the right touch of color and style to your living space. If you’re ready to toss your old ones to oblivion, here are 4 essential questions to guide you as you shop for drapery fabric.

What’s the weather like?

Light, airy fabrics are perfect for summer. They let air circulate inside your living space instead of trapping it in, which is what heavy drapes would have done. If you experience heavy winters in your area, going for heavy silk or velvet drapes is a good option since both are excellent insulators, says Real Simple.

What’s the mood you’re going for?

Certain colors establish the mood and ambiance of a room. For instance, dark curtains can make can make your room much smaller while bright curtains can expand the look and feel of your space. Blue and mint green shades are calming, relaxing colors while bright yellow and ochre hues are warm and welcoming.

What’s your style?

Do you like playing with prints? If your walls and rugs are a solid color, you might want to go for prints or patterns in your drapery fabric or you can do it the other way around. Pair up curtains in solid colors with printed or patterned rugs or wall paper for a balanced look. Play with dots, lines, squares, or graphic prints.

What’s the length?

Wondering if you should let your curtains reach all the way to your floors or maybe just to your window sills? Go for the classic look by allowing the curtains to hover an inch off the floor. If you try to cut it at the length of your sills, this could make for short curtains that look awkward and off. In addition, different window sizes mean different lengths and that’s not convenient. Reserve those short curtains for your kitchen instead since long ones aren’t exactly practical in that space.
